张之洞为权倾一时的晚清重臣,当其七十大寿时,贺者如云。一时不能亲往者,也纷纷呈寄寿文,以表贺意。其中,以曾经师事张之洞,累官陕西、江宁布政史,护理两江总督的樊增祥所撰骈文最长,达二千余言,由电报局分日拍发。如此长的寿文自然通篇“歌功颂德”,细述张氏德政,获张激赏。其时“新学”方兴,各类新词不断由日本传入,张之洞对此却反感非常,力禁学界用“日本新词”。樊氏寿文亦将此叙入,极表赞佩,有句云:“如有佳语,不含鸡舌而亦香:尽去新词,不食马肝为知味。”(《清稗类钞·文学》) 文中所谓“鸡舌”一名鸡舌香,即丁香,据说含在嘴中能去口臭。汉三省故事,郎官日含鸡舌香,欲其奏事对答,气味芬芳。《汉官仪》上:“尚书郎含鸡舌香,伏其下,奏事。”所谓“马肝”,系相传马肝有毒,食之能致人
