Located in the South American town of Bilca Baba, near the equator, is the world famous longevity home contiguous with the Caucasus. I was interested in this small place in the Andes long ago and would like to know the secret of the longevity of the locals. Coincidentally, in 1986, the Ecuadorian government, through the World Health Organization, asked for our assistance in the hope of identifying more and more causes of MI in the country’s urban population. The government asked for my willingness, and I said nothing without delay, and immediately promised to go there to conduct a health survey. We, a pedestrian, first arrived in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, and then flew to the southern city of Loja to drive another three hours and finally to Birkabamba. Although it is also a mountain in the area, Bilbao Bamba is only 1,500 meters above sea level. Compared to Quito, which is 2,800 meters above sea level, Bilbao is considered to be “lowland”, so the air here is not too thin and we all breathe well. No need to worry about being hit by alpine reactions.
