Passive solar-powered earth-covered homes. Relative humidity and energy use have been monitored in central Kansas for 17 months. Insulating the windows at night has a significant effect on the insulation. Two curtain walls in the building can increase the benefits of heat and ventilation. Each day, the temperature inside the earth bunker varies from 62°F in winter to 87°F in summer, and the average room temperature is generally 73°F. This type of sheltered home uses 30% less electricity than the same size house on the ground. Its firewood burner burns 67% less than the average home, and does not require propane (gas). In general, at least 80% of the heat is provided by passive solar technology and earth cover methods.
