At least in mice, interferon can enter the embryo within the mother either in a direct or indirect manner. Injection of interferon into pregnant AKR mice (a pure strain that spontaneously produces lymphomas) will inhibit young mice from developing an infectious, murine leukemia virus even one week after birth.
