5. Madagascar Madagascar is an island nation on the Indian Ocean in southern Africa and is economically backward. In 1996, the gross domestic product was about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars, per capita was 260 U.S. dollars, inflation was 8%, and foreign debt was about 4.5 billion U.S. dollars. The World Bank’s Annual Report 1996 included Malaysia as one of the 45 least developed countries in the world, ranking 13th in the bottom, 74% of households living below the poverty line. Malaysia has no electromechanical processing and manufacturing, and the market demands all. Rely on imports. In 1996, the total value of imports was 475 million U.S. dollars, of which mechanical and electrical products were about 100 million U.S. dollars, accounting for 20.8% of total imports, including 40 million U.S. dollars for machinery and equipment, 19.7 million U.S. dollars for electrical products, and 1 million U.S. dollars for agricultural machinery.
