Objective To investigate the changes of serum copper, iron and zinc levels in pregnant women and its clinical significance. Methods The contents of copper, iron and zinc in serum of 70 pregnant women and 45 non-pregnant women were measured with Xintian WFX-II atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results Serum copper in pregnant women was higher than that in non-pregnant women (P < 0.01), while serum zinc in pregnant women was lower than that in non-pregnant women (P <0 01). Cu/Zn ratio was higher in pregnant women than in non-pregnant women. Serum iron and Fe/Cu ratios showed no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions The serum copper in pregnant women is increased and the ratio of Cu/Zn is also increased, suggesting that pregnant women may have iron deficiency anemia. In addition, serum zinc in pregnant women is lower than normal, indicating that pregnant women should be supplemented with zinc.
