Although inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) provides a precise and accurate method for the determination of boron, its sensitivity is not sufficient to measure water and mud extract. In addition, iron interference on the most sensitive boron emission lines (249.773 and 249.678 nm) complicates direct measurements in other applications. Some methods have suggested that it is necessary to separate and pre-enrich boron prior to measurement, whereas solvent extraction techniques provide better enrichment. However, neither chloroform nor petrol is a suitable solvent for ICP-AES even without regard to the factors that are hazardous to health.
