In 1973, the Geological Survey of Canada started the manufacturing of an in-flight vertical gradiometer using a light-absorption magnetometer. The idea is supported by this theoretical study: it confirms that the vertical gradient is generated by the igneous structure measured by a short base (2 meter) aeromagnetic magnetic gradiometer with a sensitivity of 0.01.
