笔者通过对山西几处综采高产高效工作面的调查，结合国内现有双高面巷道布置存在的问题，提出综采双高面巷道应采用多条（锚喷支护大断面）巷道布置方式，并分析了多巷制的优点和“多进多回式”新Ｕ型、Ｈ型、Ｚ型和Ｗ型等工作面通风系统的构成和优点，以及需要进一步讨论和解决的问题。在此基础上，构思了“长短壁结合”的开采方式及其两种形式，即“中间大两端小”的“对拉”长壁工作面和长壁工作面与短壁工作面共采的开采方式。
