In a recent reviewing class, when a student successfully stated that “the largest four-digit number is 9999 and the smallest four-digit number is 1,000,” I am ready to move on to the teaching of the next one. Students who usually have good math scores asks: “Teacher, I know the largest single digit is 9, and what is the smallest single digit?” After listening to other students, they bowed their heads and some laughed . I did not stop them, because I realized that the “laughter” at this time was as wonderful as the “no laugh”, and the students’ thinking would surely spark their wisdom after the collision.
