中国何时出现有铭青铜器始终为学界所关注，曹淑琴曾于1988年撰文综述(曹淑琴：《商代中期有铭铜器初探》，《考古》1988年第3期)。此文中列举了21件早期青铜器，其中二里冈期青铜容器8件，青铜戈6件；殷墟时期青铜容器7件。当然，这些铜器上的铸饰是否均为铭文并未定论，有些铜器的断代也可商榷，但该文是迄今为止搜集资料和研究最为全面的一篇专作。此后虽多有学者研究，然而国内新材料主要是以下两例。
