The Kentucky Geological Survey is conducting a study to identify and catalog surface subsidence caused by the collapse of rock formations above underground coal mines in western Kentucky coalfields. The study area includes Hopkins, Mullingarger, Webster, Union and Ohio counties in Kentucky, where coal mining has been underway since the 1920s, using a 1: 24,000 scale Conventional color aerial photographs were used to interpret and map mine subsidence areas. The result will help coal mine workers determine the boundaries of the subsidence and provide initial guidance for identifying areas where subsidence may occur in the future. Photographic interpretations of subsidence types in the area will also be developed. In addition, historical aerial photographs obtained in the past 25 years will be used to show the continuous development of subsidence at a single location.
