梁实秋是中国现代文学史上一位特点鲜明的批评家。在梁实秋早期对新文学的严厉批评中,即显示了其片面中又不无某些深刻的文学见解,他注重理性、标准与节制,强调以所谓“文学的纪律”来抑制浪漫的态度,反对感情决溃。白壁德的新人文主义是梁实秋“人性论”的基本架构。他在20世纪30年代同鲁迅论战,暴露了其贵族化的立场,但他对当时“左”的机械论与庸俗社会学的批评,有的也切中肯綮。由于现代中国特定的历史条件,梁实秋的文学观注定要被现代文学主潮抛弃。但作为一位有理论个性的批评家,无论是得是失,他都在中国现代文学史上留下了其特有的痕迹。
