[International Fissile Materials Panel (IPFM) website reported on April 30, 2015] The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced that it will soon begin reprocessing spent fuel on research reactors. The reprocessing will take place at a facility called H-Canyon at the Savannah River Site. The facility reprocessed spent-cladding HEU-rich aluminum-clad spent fuel originating from research reactors and medical isotope production hedges. The Department of Energy said the post-processing operation is part of a non-proliferation effort and its financial impact on the Savannah River Area is also a high priority consideration.
