Human glioma is one of the most common human malignant tumors, its outstanding feature is the invasion of normal human brain tissue. At present, it is thought that Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a key role in the invasion and growth of glioma. The level of expression of MMPs in human and its activity is regulated by many factors, especially its Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMPs). It can be said that the expression of MMPs and TIMPs in human glioma is directly related to the aggressiveness of glioma invasion. The role of MMPs in glioma invasiveness is reviewed.
