据多年试验观察,蚕豆在开花结荚上有四个明显的特点。1.开花多,结荚少,一般结荚率仅在20～30%左右;2.结荚多在1～3分枝,约占单株结荚总数的80%,其中尤以第二分枝结荚较多;3.单株开花连续不断,而豆荚仅座落在具3～5个小叶的复叶叶腋间,下部花常脱落,上部花则多不结荚;4.营养输送有顶端优势,有照顾顶端生长而甩掉中、下部花、荚的现象。根据这些特点,采取相应的整枝、打顶调控技术,能有效地增加结实率,提高产量。
