This article reviews the important role of metal ions in neurodegenerative diseases and advances in the research of metal therapeutics for these diseases. Taking Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease as the representatives, combined with the preliminary research results of our group, we discuss the important role of metal ions in protein aggregation and oxidative stress reaction, suggesting that the metal chelation strategy should be the treatment of such diseases The preferred strategy and describes several metal chelating agents that have been or are intended to be used in clinical trials. The metal binding sites for alkylated neurodegenerative disease-related proteins are also described that can significantly inhibit the formation of this protein aggregate And reactive oxygen species production, which may be a chelation strategy after a more potential for the development of neurodegenerative diseases treatment.
