A three-phase three-layer polycrystalline silicon electrode was used to fabricate a vertical frame transmission charge-coupled camera sensor. This device has 496 vertical interlaced cells with 475 resolution cells per line. The imaging area is 12.8 × 9.6 mm 2, which corresponds to the area of one inch of video tube. Although defect-free devices have not yet been made, it seems easy to make such devices with due diligence. The device operates in a stand-alone 6 x 6 x 15 cm-5 camera with pulse division circuitry and commercial-transistor-logic logic (TTL). The clock line driver is made up of discrete transistors. The camera provides a properly filtered black-and-white video signal in a standard 525-wire television system that contains the necessary blanking periods and synchronization signals. Large-scale integration of these circuits can easily make the camera’s volume reduced to 1/2.
