This essay aims to compare and contrast the Cooperative Principle (CP) and Politeness Principle (PP) under the context of English learning and teaching in China. Through both the advantages and the disadvantages of the two principles, the author attempts to reach the conclusion that CP and PP, two long-tested guiding principles can offer both students and teachers a new criterion against which the accuracy and appropriateness of cross-cultural communications can be measured.
