Selenium-treated mice can increase the sensitivity of mice to the delayed hypersensitivity (DTH) induced by the sensitizer trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB). In vitro experiments demonstrated that selenium-stained mouse spleen-adherent cells presented hapten trinitrophenyl to TNCB-sensitized T-lymphocytes to stimulate T-cell proliferative responses, ie, antigen-presenting function was superior to untreated controls. Strong. The spleen-adherent cells of normal mice were treated with selenium in vitro and were more capable of presenting antigens. It is suggested that selenium promotes DTH response by enhancing the function of antigen-presenting cells.
