Nippon Steel Plant uses EF-AOD-CC process route to produce stainless steel and other special steels. To reduce smelting costs and increase stainless steel productivity, a new smelting furnace (NMF) was designed and manufactured in November 1985. In order to achieve a significant reduction in power consumption, two new preheating systems are provided for this new unit. One is to use kerosene as a fuel to preheat the furnace, and the other is to recover the waste heat from the smelting and preheating system in the furnace for preheating in the tank. In addition, this electric furnace system has two furnaces sharing a single power supply, so that preheating and smelting operations can be alternately performed in both furnaces, thereby being highly efficient. Since the equipment was installed, its operating condition has been good. As a result of this exercise
