Based on the original Swedish and Danish sources, one can understand the extent to which Scandinavian citizens and elites from 1937 to 1938 understood the Japanese atrocities in China. Although the relevant reports were intermittent and lacking in coherence, Scandinavians still know the Japanese atrocities in China. In fact, uncertainties in the number of casualties, the underestimation of the true extent of the atrocities, and the focus on the plight of Westerners on the Chinese battlefield under the perspective of a European center have all been reflected in the original sources. These materials clearly support the Chinese side and under the influence of ideology, they are offensive to Japan. Even so, this pro-Chinese sentiment has not caused the punitive measures such as trade sanctions by Sweden and Denmark to Japan.
