This article explores the potential of incorporating organizational capacity theory into the social accumulation structure (SSA) framework. The theory of SSA is well known in the field of Marxist scholarship, but not so much in theory of competence. A useful definition of organizational capacity is: “Organizational competence refers to the ability of an organization to coordinate a range of tasks using a variety of organizational resources to achieve a given objective.” Backed by Edith Brossos, theory of ability is often explored in the context of evolutionary economics, emphasizing the ability of firms to rely on the path to survival in a competitive environment. The author believes that capacity theory can give us a deeper understanding of how institutional structures of capital accumulation in the context of SSA theory play a role in and reaction to the dynamic competition at the enterprise and industry levels. This article will discuss two preliminary applications as examples: the disintegration of the social accumulation structure of the United States after the Second World War and the climate change constraints that may be encountered in rebuilding the social accumulation structure after the current economic crisis.
