现代坦克是地面作战部队的主要进攻性武器,特别是近年来出现的新式装甲坦克,一般炮弹对其无能为力,即使是比较先进的穿甲弹也难以突破大批坦克群的进攻。以苏联为首的华约组织国家的地面坦克以3.4:1的压倒优势超过了北约,为此,以美国为首的北约组织国则纷纷组织力量研制新式反坦克武器,来抗衡华约坦克部队的力量。炮弹采用激光制导是近几年来的新技术,它可以极大地提高炮弹的命中精度和杀伤率,节省人员和弹药的消耗。目前在研制激光制导炮弹方面,美国处于领先地位,现已研制成功的新型“铜斑蛇”激光制导炮弹,是北约投入生产使用的第一种弹药。它必将对迅速发展的苏联坦克群起到一定的威胁
