The Tempest is a short story by Kate Chopin, a 20th-century American women writer, famous for the successful portrayal of women’s equality and freedom in their sexual relations. It is noteworthy that the article devoted a great deal of deviations to shaping figures and advancing the plot and echoing the formal theme of the deviation from the expressed theme of women’s patriarchal social order and statute. Based on the theory of deviation proposed by Leach, this dissertation classifies the deviation phenomena in the text and analyzes its function and influence in the text by combining with examples. By demonstrating the application of deviation approach in the description of character dialogues, inner emotions and surroundings, and the subtleties of “intertwinedness” with the expression of the theme of the article, the protagonist’s protest against social norms is revealed more deeply And the release of nature, and Chopin’s superb art in literary creation.
