彩色显示有多种型式,归纳起来可分为发光型与受光型两大类。在发光型显示中,以电子束显示的发光效率为最高(20~50lm/W)。它具有亮度及对比度均佳,适合室外全天侯使用,能给出全色图像,以及分辨率高、响应速度快等优点。目前在显示器件中仍处于领先地位。进入80年代,大屏幕显示发展极快。主要应用于军事指挥、工业和交通方面的管理及控制,大型体育场和展览馆,以及城市广场的宣传和广告等方面。大屏幕显示可分投影式和直观式两大类。投影显示要求纵深的投影空间,屏幕愈大,所需空间也愈大,同时亮度亦随投影面积增大而降低。目前主要发展直观式大屏幕显示。
