民间舞,作为土生土长于民间的鲜活艺术形式,在经历了时代的变迁和历史的发展过程后,逐渐由以自娱自乐为目的的“原生态”民间舞发展成为具有一定审美特征并为他人提供娱乐的表演性民间舞。不仅表演的主体对象有了很大变化,更重要的是表演方式的迥然不同。《外国舞蹈史及作品赏析》中这样写到:“表演性民间舞是意在通过表演,取悦于神与人的民间舞,因而需要在保持自娱性民问舞自得其乐的特征之同时,更强调娱神和娱人的目的性,动作的强度和技术的难度均有所提高,以适应寺庙、广场和剧场等新型表演场所的需要。”
