For social policy research, life history research is a valuable tool. By introducing an anthropological approach to policy research, the article uses a series of recent life history data collected from the UK to analyze the value of life history research. These life-history documents the experiences of individuals who spans the public sector and the “third department” during their careers. The article first briefly reviews the advantages and disadvantages of the life-history research method, and then analyzes the selected issues and topics that appear at both the situational and the personal level. The article concludes that life history works provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between the public sector and the “third department” and the process by which the notion of “department” and policy is constructed and formulated.
