Mannheim multi-purpose hall, is one of the structural prototypes Frey Otto focus on the study of the shell structure (Gitterschale) masterpiece. A 7500m2 wooden column-free space - as an experimental building with large-scale reticulated shell structures, the Mannheim multi-purpose hall can be seen as a real ground-breaking foundation for this type of structure. The estimated 25-year multi-purpose hall will remain one of Mannheim’s landmarks 40 years from now. Manfred Sack calls the roof of the Mannheim multi-purpose hall “the most complex simple roof in the world.” Indeed, the architectural principle of the multi-purpose hall in Mannheim is even more “simple” than the rich space it creates - it is the simplicity of this structural principle that reflects Frey Otto’s basic
