Polynuclear leukocytes (PMNs) are believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of ARDS, emphysema and cryptogenic alveolitis. PMNs participate in lung injury through their reactive oxidation intermediates or release of hydrolases and cellular proteins from the granules. To further determine the role of granule components of neutrophils in lung injury, the authors examined the cytotoxic effects of neutrophils and compared their association with human embryonic lung and endothelial cells.
