Professor Gary Downeyis is the current chair of the internationally acclaimed “Society of Scientific Social Studies” (4S; term to 2015) and is also a renowned scholar in STS and engineering studies. In this interview, Professor Downey described how he led the 4S society to evoke STS research beyond linear models of “the creation, diffusion and use of knowledge.” He was a mechanical engineer and later worked as a cultural anthropologist on nuclear energy and nuclear waste management. He described how he developed his concept of “critical engagement” and its practice. Since the 1960s, American engineers have shaped engineering as the dominant image for problem solving. Downey’s critical engagement with engineering (including engineering education and training) begins with a critique of this dominant image Sexual analysis. He questioned why engineering remained largely invisible except as a synonym for technology or as a metaphor for the heterogeneous construction of new technologies in the rise of STS as an academic field. How did he appear? He faced the following crucial difficulties in teaching by presenting objects obscured by the predominant image of engineering as a problem-solving object and presenting another As a collaborative “problem definition and solution” (PDS) alternative engineering image. He is now theorizing the “travel” of STS knowledge and expertise by promoting PDS imagery and related practices in the field of localization of engineering shapes and jobs. Downey also explains how he, along with other researchers, built “Engineering Studies” as an interdisciplinary field that blends traditional and non-linear research with key steps including the creation of an International Network of Engineering Research (INES) Organized the INES Forum and successfully created an SCI indexed journal of Engineering Research: International Journal of Engineering Research (English).
