To improve the point defensive capabilities of the aircraft carrier battle cluster, the U.S. Navy is installing the Mk23 Target Acquisition System (TAS) for several classes of surface ships. It is an automated radar that helps to deflect sea-swept, altitude-dive and underwater-launched missiles that can not be detected by normal radars. When an offensive missile crosses over the horizon or appears overhead, the pulsed Doppler system detects it and directs the correct counterattack through a computer connected to NATO’s Sea Sparrow missile system. Since 1978, Hughes Aircraft Company’s Ground Systems Group has been producing six systems per year at speeds for the sea
