It is speculated that endothelin is a potent vasoconstrictor peptide derived from the endothelium. The authors studied nine patients with normal subjects and six patients with severe congestive heart failure (CHF) and observed neurophysiological compensations for hemodynamic stress. Subjects and Methods Plasma levels of endothelin were measured using a sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay. A series of venous blood samples were taken during a 90-minute rest in the supine position and a 60-degree tilt-up for 30 minutes. Endothelin levels are compared to the known compensatory neurotransmitters.
