The researchers found that some antibodies prevent both staphylococcal infections and E. coli infections because both bacteria use the same polysaccharide in their cell walls to bind to each other. Because several other pathogens also use the same polysaccharide, this finding offers the promise of a single vaccine to prevent various bacteria. The essence of this discovery relates to the extracellular polysaccharide poly-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG) that is attached to the cell. PNAG is a promising grape ball
