In the colonial era, the United States had no stock exchanges, and only a handful of people keen on trading in securities traded in cafes, in auction rooms, or in some corner of the street. The kind of transaction is basically unorganized. People do not want to buy stocks because they are not sure whether they can sell their stocks when they need them. On May 17, 1792, a group of 24 merchants and auctioneers signed the “Indus tree agreement” (because the agreement was signed under the plane trees).
