The current design method for the introduction of lap joints is only applicable to monotonic loads and where the stress of the steel bar is lower than the yield stress. However, buildings in the seismic zone may be subject to strong cyclical forces; and, in the event of a major earthquake, certain parts of the building may experience cycles of reaching inelastic ranges. Survey data indicate that the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete lap joints will be adversely affected by strong cyclic loading. On this issue, the existing literature mainly describes the properties of lap joints and seldom discusses the derivation of design methods. As a result, most current design codes dictate that lap joints must not be installed in areas where bending yield and strong stress can occur.
