In this paper, we use the reduced-form expression as the object and investigate (1) how to evaluate the learners’ reduction using Japanese as the native speaker; (2) the learner’s actual use of the reduced form. From the results of survey (1), it was found that senior Japanese learners use the reduced form more often than the original form in conversations among friends. However, the result of survey (2) shows that even though the overall level of Japanese language proficiency has reached a level of sophistication, the degree of reduction of the contracted form is far from being freely applied. Based on the above results, the author suggests that the level of learners should be considered in Japanese teaching, and the condensed forms should be clearly guided in the classroom in stages.
