Scientists have discovered how sorghum can make itself resistant to fungal diseases and intend to exploit this discovery to develop non-polluting herbicides. They also want to use genetic engineering to transplant the disease-resistant mechanisms of sorghum to other crops, including cereals such as wheat and rice, as these crops are not yet effective against fungal diseases. Anthracnose is the main disease of sorghum. Ralph Nicholson and Beth Edell of the Plant Faculty of Polder University in Lafarge, Indiana, USA, found in the survey that some sorghum plants were resistant to anthracnose and others were highly infected with anthrax disease.
