火灾时产生的大量的烟,妨碍避难和消防活动,引起了许多人身伤亡事故。特别是在地下街道中发生火灾并造成火灾扩大的事例是很多的。地下街道火灾的消烟方法有化学的、机械的方法,排烟车、泡沫消烟车已实用化,但还不是根本的对策。实现真正的消烟对策是消防技术极为紧迫和重要的课题。静电消烟装置和电收尘原理一样,是对室内空间施以强电场,使充满空间的烟粒子离子化,附着在地电位的壁和底板以及天花板上,以消除烟尘。
