The levels of endothelin (ET) in plasma and in vitro induced by monocyte-derived and dexamethasone (DXM) intervention in 31 patients with acute cerebral infarction and 16 patients with hypertension were measured by radioimmunoassay. The results showed that the level of monocyte-derived ET induced by acute cerebral infarction was significantly increased in vitro and positively correlated with the level of plasma ET and the degree of neural damage. The level of monocyte-derived ET induced by DXM was decreased in vitro . It is suggested that the synthesis and release of ET by monocytes may be one of the mechanisms involved in the process of ischemic brain injury in acute cerebral infarction, whereas DXM inhibits the synthesis and release of ET and has the effect of improving ischemic brain injury
