This article outlines the potential for medium-speed diesel manufacturers to meet emission regulations (with a focus on in-cylinder technology), highlighting the potential for particulate emissions while maintaining low levels of NOx emissions. Specifically, Ricardo developed a combustion engine with a cylinder diameter of 170-230 mm by means of 3DCFD analysis, using a Ricardo engine-based CFD software called VECTIS. In addition to reducing engine PM emissions, the low-carbon smoke combustion system developed helps reduce initial engine costs, overall lifetime costs, and durability and reliability of engine and aftertreatment devices.
