1747年发现用甜菜制糖,至今己有230余年的历史。甜菜含糖量的提高经历了一个漫长的时间。1747年为1.6%,1794年为3%,1848年为9.8%,1898年为17.8%,到1908年提高到18.5%,同目前甜菜含糖水平相近。近几年来,世界主要甜菜生产国以及我国甜菜产区,甜菜含糖率都有较大波动,呈下降趋势。新疆由于有适宜甜菜生长的优厚条件,含糖量在全国是比较高的,但随着甜菜种植面积的扩大,近几年来也呈下降趋势。
