云南区域地质面貌比较复杂,既不完全体现所谓地台的稳定性,也不是象地槽区那样的活动类型,而是在不同地质阶段,既表现有相对稳定及相对活动复杂的地质体。地质结构是以块断型式为主,各块体问虽有一定的内在联系,但在发展的各个阶段中却各自有着不同的发展历史。如象“山字型”东翼的滇东区,则以海相碳酸盐岩为主,自下古生代~中生代三叠系基本上沦为海域;而西翼的楚雄盆地则为陆源区,其中的次级块体也有不同的发展史及构造格局,往往只一大断裂或一古构造带相隔,沉积条件及构造
