The study of active and passive infrared non-destructive testing techniques is to determine its limitations and their potential military uses. Active infrared non-destructive testing methods require different techniques to heat a sample using a typical infrared bulb’s radiation and CO 2 laser. These methods use a scanning infrared radiometer and an infrared camera to detect thermal anomalies that indicate surface defects and near-surface human defects. PIR research requires the development and qualification of a miniature high-speed infrared radiometer to inspect the inner surface of a cannon barrel and other hard-to-reach surfaces that are difficult to test with a common instrument. Each of the infrared non-destructive testing methods discussed has its advantages. However, that one application, the one that works best, must be determined after considering the geometry, material and quality of the target.
