华中理工大学高等教育研究所涂又光教授的新近力作《中国高等教育史论》(以下简称《史论》,湖北教育出版社1997年12月出版,26.6万字,责任编辑陈雅峰),是一本颇具特色、很有深度的中国高教史论著。作为一部史论,本书的特点,不仅资料翔实,引述了不少经典原著,每论必有理有据,凡重要论据决不用第二手材料,反映出作者极其严谨的治学作风;而且结构新颖,不同于某些摆流水账的叙史方法,而是把到清朝末年数千年的中国高等教育史,划分为5段,在每段又只着重介绍一二个代表人物的高等教育理论和实践,既简明扼要又重点突出,读后使人感到十分明晰、深刻而很受教益;特别是本书以深邃的哲学思维,对中国高等教育史提出了许多独到的观点,其中不少具有现实针对性,有的实际已超出了高等教育史研究的范围,有着更广泛的意义。对这些观点,不论你是否同意,都不能不引起思考。涂又光教授是国内外知名的中国哲学史家,从他翻译出版他的老师冯友兰先生著《中国哲学简史》(北京大学出版社1985年2月出版,1995年8月已3次印刷;原著为英文本),许多读者可能对他已有所了解。以中国哲学史家来写中国高等教育史论,这可能
