The strength of the Earth’s magnetic field has been reduced by more than half in the past four millennia, a trend that could be a precursor to a reversal of the magnetic polarity, concluding Professor S. Banerjee at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Minneapolis and D.Sprowl, a graduate student at the department, reported on their findings at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union, held in San Francisco last December, based on high-quality core samples taken from the bottom of the Minnesota lake Core samples show a relative change in the magnetic field over 10,000 years, Banerjee said: “The weakened magnetic field we find may be a temporary phenomenon, but we may be entering the beginning of a magnetic field inversion.”
