The prevalence of atherosclerosis (AS) in the world is increasing year by year, and research on AS is getting more and more in depth. Appropriate animal models are the key points to study the mechanism of atherosclerosis and drug development. In many animal models, guinea pigs have many advantages as the research object of atherosclerosis, which is mainly reflected in the composition ratio of plasma lipoproteins, the transport mode of cholesterol, the existence form and proportion of cholesterol in the liver, the sensitivity to exogenous cholesterol, Cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism during the key enzyme activity changes and so on. This review based on the characteristics of lipid metabolism, comparative analysis of these aspects to explain the advantages of guinea pigs as animal models of atherosclerosis.
