From 1979 to 1980 found that: suffering from phenylketonuria maternal offspring can cause serious damage to their children. If such patients did not receive phenylalanine diet during pregnancy, their offspring may have microcephaly, mental retardation, congenital heart disease, delayed intrauterine growth and special facial deformities, collectively referred to as maternal phenylketonuria syndrome Or maternal phenylketonuria embryo disease. Since 1984, the International Maternal Phenylketonuria Study Group conducted a follow-up of 414 live births in 576 pregnancies. Data show that prenatal or prenatal diet for sick mothers can reduce the damage to the fetus.
