Poly N-vinylcarbazole can be synthesized by exposure of N-vinylcarbazole-CHC1s solution to UV light.This conclusion was verified by experimental results of fluorescence spectra and NMR. Yield of poly N-vinylcarbazole was as high as 70%. Factors which affect the yield, such as light intensity, concentration ofN-vinylcarbazole and time of illumination were also studied. Discussion about the mechanism of initia-tion is given. It is demonstrated that exciplex first formed, then decomposed into free radicals whichinitiated reaction of polymerization.
