At present, in the oil production, teaching, scientific research, and periodicals, the meaning of certain nouns is not uniform. The lack of a consistent definition of some terms often leads to confusion and misunderstanding in technical exchanges. Therefore, it is necessary to call for the relevant departments to clarify the definition of certain terminology. Here are some examples to talk about our opinion. 1. Heavy oil or viscous oil These two terms are used more in the petroleum system in recent years, but because there is no clear definition, people’s understanding of the term is different. Some people think that heavy oil or viscous oil refers to high viscosity crude oil, which is equivalent to foreign heavy crude oil. Some people think heavy oil or viscous oil includes viscous crude oil and some easily condensable crude oil. In our opinion, the latter view is not appropriate. As its name implies, heavy oil is a viscous oil, that is, we say highly viscous crude oil. Although the term heavy oil is relatively simple, but inconsistent with the international common title. Therefore, we recommend that the viscous crude oil is called high viscous crude oil or heavy crude oil.
